課程概述

本課程著重培育碩士班學生對流行病學基本觀念及研究設計的充分理解,與應用統計方法實際執行流行病學資料分析(data analysis)的能力,俾便同學進入指導教授研究團隊時能夠立即進入情況。課堂講演部分規劃成三個彼此獨立的單元:第一部份為「研究設計」,介紹流行病學因果推論法則與基本研究設計的原理;第二部分為「分析方法」,介紹資料分析的原則及各種統計方法的應用;第三部分為「文獻批判」,透過閱讀指定文獻及課堂報告來培育學生批判性思考的能力。授課內容主要來自核心教科書Rothman KJ. Epidemiology: An Introduction. New York: Oxford University Press(2012),佐以其他參考書目中的特色內容。

本課程的實習課:「流行病學原理:資料分析」為單獨1學分的選修課程,時間在週三下午第四節(4:30 - 5:20),地點在醫學院 509 電腦教室。

To facilitate the ability of master students in doing research under the guidance of professors, this course is aimed to establish the fundamental epidemiologic concepts, learn study design, and utilize statistical approaches for epidemiologic data analysis. This course includes three independent parts: (1) Study design: introduce the causal inferences and fundamental concepts of study design, (2) Analytical method: introduce the principle of data analysis and application of statistical approach, (3) Critical appraisal: establish the ability to independently critique designated scientific papers. The main textbook is “Rothman KJ. Epidemiology: An Introduction. New York: Oxford University Press (2012)” and other textbooks are also included for specific topics.

The lab course “Principle of Epidemiology: data analysis” is a selective course with 1 credit. This course is held every Friday from 4:30a to 5:20p at the 509 computer room of College of Medicine.
 

課程目標
本課程透過對流行病學基本觀念及研究設計的課堂介紹,培養碩士班學生下列知能(competencies):
1. 能夠在閱讀科學期刊論文與從事本身的碩士論文研究時,正確應用因果推論法則(principles of causal inference)
2. 能夠清楚瞭解各種研究設計的原理,包括:臨床試驗(clinical trials)、描述流行病學(descriptive epidemiology)、世代研究法(cohort study)以及病例對照研究法(case-control study)
3. 能夠瞭解隨機變異(random variation)與系統性干擾(bias)對研究結果的影響,並能應用統計方法實際執行流行病學資料分析
4. 能夠批判性地閱讀實證研究論文(critically review empirical studies)

This course is aimed to establish the following competencies via the introduction of epidemiologic fundamental concepts and research design.
1. Correctly apply the principles of causal inference while reading scientific journals and doing research on their master thesis.
2. Clearly understand the principles of how to design different type of studies, e.g., clinical trials, descriptive epidemiologic studies, cohort studies, and case-control studies.
3. Understand how random variation and bias affect the findings of a research and utilize statistical approaches to perform epidemiologic data analysis.
4. Build up the ability of critical appraisal on empirical studies.
 
課程要求
課程表有註明每堂課授課內容對應的教科書章節,供同學於上課前後自行閱讀預習或複習。每次上課的投影片會放在CEIBA課程網站上供同學自行下載。期中考與期末考各占學期總成績 35%,考題為四選一單選題。

期中考後,每一位同學都需要批判性閱讀指定原著論文,並回答作業問題,在12月16日前繳交。作業視同Open Book考試,請勿互相討論,也不可抄襲別人作業,抄襲以零分計算。對論文或題目若有疑問,請直接詢問課程助教。助教會公布Office Hour 時間統一解答。

12月16日王榮德老師將講解批判性文獻閱讀的基本原則及Integration of Epidemiology and Outcome Research for Health Policy。同學請在課前閱讀教科書「流行病學方法論」(2010)第14章「如何中肯的評論一篇實證性研究」以及事先上網瀏覽教學影片:https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=2&v=sWAG0Jx7Pq4

12月23日及30日為課堂討論。針對每一篇閱讀論文,課程助教會事先將全班同學分組,以臨場隨機抽選方式,指定6位同學上台各自報告5分鐘(被抽中上台報告的同學有特別加分)。助教也會以隨機方式指定 10 位其他組別的同學提問。

王榮德老師授課部分及課堂討論不考試。文獻批判作業與課堂表現(是否上台報告或發問參與討論)合占學期總成績 30%。

本課程評量方式計分法如下:
百分位總成績 = 35%期中考 +35%期末考 +文獻批判作業 +課堂表現
(教師得視學習狀況調整後兩項之配分比例)
百分位總成績將依校方頒布的標準轉換成等第制成績送校:
A+ (90–100), A (85–89), A– (80–84), B+ (77–79), B (73–76), B– (70–72), C+ (67–69), C (63–66), C– (60–62), F (<60)
請注意:研究所修課成績及格門檻為70分

The syllabus of this course lists the corresponding book chapter(s) for each lecture. Students should preview and review these chapters before and after the lecture, respectively. The slides of each lecture can be downloaded from CEIBA. Midterm and final exam each is accounted for 35% of the total grade. All exam questions are multiple-choice (4 selections) with a single answer.

After mid-term examination. Research papers will be assigned for in-depth reading. Each student will need to submit the answers to the questions for each of the designated papers by December 16. Plagiarism is forbid. Co-authorship is not allowable. If you have questions, you can ask TA for help.

On December 16th, Prof. Wang will give a lecture to explain how to read a scientific paper and perform critical appraisal and "Integration of Epidemiology and Outcome Research for Health Policy". Students need to read chapter 14 of the textbook “Methodology of Epidemiology (2010)” , and view the teaching video at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=2&v=sWAG0Jx7Pq4 in advance.

On December 23 and 30, class discussion will be held. All students will be grouped. By the instruction of teaching assistants, students in each group will be randomly selected to make a 5-five minute oral presentation on the designated paper.

The final exam will not include Prof. Wang’s lecture. The participation, include presentation or discussion in the class, account for 30% of the total grade.

Total score (at the basis of 100) = 35% midterm exam + 35% final exam + 30%(critical appraisal + in-class participation) (lecturers can adjust the proportion of the grade of the last two components.
